Knee Osteoarthritis: Understanding Gonarthrosis and Your Care Options

Is your knee making it difficult to climb stairs, get up from a chair or go for a walk? Osteoarthritis can affect everyday life through pain, stiffness and worry about movement. At Centre Algos in Fribourg, our integrative approach considers your joint, your overall health and what matters to you. We work together to develop a care plan that may help relieve symptoms and maintain your mobility.

Gonarthrosis: recognising the symptoms

Knee osteoarthritis, also called gonarthrosis, affects the joint and the surrounding tissues. Symptoms may include:

  • Pain when walking, using stairs or standing for a long time.
  • A stiff knee when you get up or after sitting.
  • Difficulty fully bending or straightening your leg.
  • Swelling that comes and goes.
  • A grinding sensation, clicking or a feeling of instability.

Symptoms can vary from day to day. Clicking sounds alone do not tell you how severe the osteoarthritis is. Persistent pain deserves medical advice to establish its cause.

We also want to understand what has become harder beyond the knee itself: spending time out with loved ones, working on your feet, gardening or simply leaving home without having to plan every journey around your symptoms.

Common causes and risk factors

Osteoarthritis is more complex than a joint that has simply been used too much. Age, family history, a previous injury and substantial or repeated joint loading can all play a part. Excess body weight can also increase the load on your knee. These factors combine differently for each person.

Understanding your history helps us avoid generic advice. Your work, movement habits and treatments you have already tried are all part of the conversation. We explore them with you without judgement, taking into account what is realistic in your daily life.

How Centre Algos supports you

Time to understand your situation

Your first consultation lasts 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. We discuss how your pain began, how it has changed and how it affects your daily life. We review your medical file and your current treatments.

Centre Algos is run by Wilfried Beijersbergen, nurse anaesthetist and naturopath. We work alongside your doctor and do not replace them.

A care plan we build together

Together, we identify practical goals: making journeys more manageable, returning to regular activity or coping better with painful periods. Your care plan takes account of your circumstances, your preferences and the care you already receive.

Naturopathy provides a framework for discussing nutrition, sleep, recovery and daily habits. Advice is personalised. If herbal products or supplements are considered, their suitability and compatibility with your treatments need to be assessed.

Appropriate movement and muscle strengthening are important parts of knee osteoarthritis care. Our support fits alongside the recommendations of your doctor and, if you are receiving physiotherapy, your physiotherapist. We discuss how the different parts of your care can fit into your routine.

Percutaneous hydrotomy following assessment

Where appropriate following assessment, we can discuss percutaneous hydrotomy as part of an approach aimed at relieving symptoms. Before any decision, we explain what it involves, its limitations and its contraindications. Outcomes vary from person to person.

When to see your doctor first

See your doctor first if the pain is new, the diagnosis has not been established or your knee is deteriorating rapidly.

Sudden severe pain, unusual warmth or substantial knee swelling require prompt medical advice, particularly if you have a fever. After a fall, being unable to bear weight or noticing a deformity requires urgent medical assessment.
