Naturopathy

A whole-person approach to understanding your health and supporting lasting wellbeing.

Naturopathy consultation at Centre Algos

Naturopathy looks at health as a whole rather than focusing only on an individual symptom.

At Centre Algos, we take time to understand what you are experiencing, how your symptoms developed and which factors may be contributing to them. This can include your medical history, nutrition, digestion, sleep, stress, physical activity, medications, previous treatments and other aspects of your health and daily life.

The aim is not to assume that every symptom has one hidden cause. It is to understand the different factors that may be influencing your health and determine which of them can realistically be addressed.

Depending on your situation, the approach may include changes to nutrition and lifestyle, micronutrition, phytotherapy or other treatments available at Centre Algos. When useful, targeted laboratory testing may also form part of the assessment.

Naturopathy can complement conventional medical care. When symptoms require medical investigation or treatment outside our scope, appropriate medical assessment takes priority.

What is naturopathy?

Naturopathy is an approach to health that considers the person as a whole and looks at the factors that may influence symptoms, recovery and long-term wellbeing.

Rather than asking only, “How can we reduce this symptom?”, naturopathy also asks questions such as: Why might this problem be persisting? Are there nutritional, digestive, lifestyle, metabolic or other factors contributing to it? Is something interfering with recovery? And is further medical investigation needed?

At Centre Algos, naturopathy is practised within the framework of Traditional European Medicine and is adapted to the individual patient.

It does not replace conventional medicine. Instead, it can complement medical care by looking more broadly at health, lifestyle and factors that may be modifiable.

Understand the whole picture

Symptoms rarely exist in isolation.

During a naturopathic assessment, we look at the symptoms themselves but also at their history, previous diagnoses and examinations, treatments and medications, nutrition, digestion, sleep, physical activity, stress, recovery and other relevant aspects of health.

The objective is to build a clearer picture of what may be contributing to the problem rather than drawing conclusions from one symptom alone.

Identify what can be addressed

Not every contributing factor requires treatment, and not every symptom has a single underlying cause.

The next step is therefore to identify which factors appear relevant and which can realistically be addressed.

Depending on the situation, this might involve nutrition, micronutrient status, digestion, sleep, movement, stress and recovery, or another aspect of health.

When the history suggests that further investigation would be useful, targeted testing or a conventional medical assessment may be recommended.

Build an individual plan

Naturopathy is not a standard programme applied in the same way to everyone.

Once the priorities are clear, we discuss the available options with the patient and build an individual plan together.

This may include nutrition and lifestyle changes, micronutrition, phytotherapy or other appropriate treatments available at Centre Algos.

The plan can then evolve according to progress, response to treatment and the patient's needs.

Why do people consult a naturopath?

People consult a naturopath for many different reasons.

Some have a clear diagnosis but continue to experience symptoms despite treatment. Others have persistent complaints without a simple explanation. Some want to better understand how nutrition, sleep, digestion or other aspects of their health may be influencing the way they feel.

Reasons for consultation can include:

  • chronic or recurrent pain
  • persistent fatigue or reduced energy
  • digestive symptoms
  • questions about nutrition or micronutrient status
  • sleep and recovery problems
  • recurrent or persistent musculoskeletal problems
  • support during periods of prolonged stress or reduced resilience
  • a desire to improve general health and lifestyle
  • support alongside existing conventional medical care

A naturopathic consultation does not assume that these symptoms have a naturopathic cause.

Persistent or unexplained symptoms can sometimes indicate a medical condition that requires conventional investigation. Part of a responsible assessment is recognising when this should take priority.

What happens during a naturopathy consultation?

The first consultation is deliberately comprehensive because understanding the context of a health problem takes time.

We discuss your current symptoms, when they began, how they have changed and what appears to improve or worsen them.

We also review relevant medical diagnoses and examinations, medications and supplements, previous treatments, nutrition, digestion, sleep, physical activity, stress, recovery and other factors that may be relevant to your situation.

If you already have laboratory results, imaging or medical reports, these can also provide useful context.

The purpose is not to search indiscriminately for abnormalities. It is to understand the clinical picture and identify the questions that are actually worth investigating.

At the end of the assessment, we discuss the priorities with you and agree on the next steps together.

Our Knowledge Centre article describes what happens during a naturopathy consultation in more detail.

Looking beyond the immediate symptom

A symptom tells us that something is happening, but it does not always tell us why.

For example, persistent fatigue can have many possible contributors. Sleep, nutritional deficiencies, medications, stress and certain medical conditions can all play a role.

Digestive symptoms can also have very different explanations and should not automatically be attributed to a food intolerance or an imbalanced microbiome.

The same principle applies to chronic pain and other persistent symptoms.

Our aim is therefore not to force every problem into a single “root cause” explanation.

We look for relevant contributing factors, distinguish what is known from what still needs clarification, and decide what is worth addressing.

Sometimes this leads to a naturopathic treatment plan. Sometimes it leads to further testing or medical assessment. Often it involves a combination of approaches.

Nutrition, lifestyle and everyday health

Nutrition, movement, sleep, stress and recovery can influence health in meaningful ways, but there is no single lifestyle programme that is right for everyone.

Recommendations are therefore based on the patient's situation rather than a standard naturopathic diet or list of restrictions.

Depending on the problem, we may look at eating patterns, nutrient intake, physical activity, sleep quality, recovery, alcohol or tobacco use, stress and other relevant lifestyle factors.

The objective is to identify changes that are realistic, relevant and sustainable.

Micronutrition, phytotherapy and other treatments

Depending on the assessment, naturopathic care may include micronutrition, phytotherapy and other therapeutic approaches.

Micronutrition looks at vitamins, minerals, trace elements and other nutrients that the body needs in relatively small amounts but that can play important roles in normal physiological function.

Phytotherapy means the therapeutic use of plants and plant-derived preparations.

Other treatments available at Centre Algos may also form part of an individual plan when appropriate, for example cupping, Breuss massage or other relevant approaches.

Not every patient needs supplements, herbs or additional treatments. They are selected according to the clinical situation rather than being prescribed as a standard naturopathic package.

When can testing be useful?

Laboratory testing can sometimes provide useful information, but more testing is not automatically better.

At Centre Algos, tests are considered when they can help answer a specific clinical question or influence what we do next.

Depending on the situation, this may include blood testing or other targeted investigations. In selected digestive cases, stool testing may also be considered when there is a clear reason for doing so.

These investigations can sometimes go beyond the routine tests a patient has already had, but they should still be selected according to the clinical question rather than used as a broad search for abnormalities.

If symptoms suggest a condition that requires conventional medical investigation, we recommend appropriate medical assessment rather than trying to answer the question through naturopathic testing alone.

How does naturopathy work alongside conventional medicine?

Naturopathy and conventional medicine do not need to be opposing approaches.

Conventional medicine is essential for diagnosing and treating many diseases, managing acute illness and emergencies, prescribing medications and performing medical procedures when needed.

Naturopathy can complement this by spending more time exploring nutrition, lifestyle, recovery and other factors that may influence persistent symptoms and long-term health.

At Centre Algos, we do not recommend stopping prescribed medication without discussing it with the healthcare professional responsible for that treatment.

When symptoms require further medical investigation, that takes priority.

The objective is not to choose between “natural” and “conventional” medicine. It is to determine what is appropriate for the individual patient.

An individual approach at Centre Algos

At Centre Algos, naturopathy does not begin with a predetermined treatment or supplement.

We first try to understand the patient's symptoms, health history, priorities and the factors that may be contributing to the problem.

From there, we determine which areas deserve attention and whether further investigation is useful.

We then discuss the available options with the patient and build an individual plan together.

Depending on the situation, this may involve naturopathy alone, another treatment available at Centre Algos, conventional medical assessment, or a combination of approaches.

The plan can evolve over time according to the patient's progress and response.

Part of the process is helping patients better understand the factors that may influence their health, so that recommendations make sense rather than simply becoming another list of instructions.

Naturopathy consultations in Fribourg

Centre Algos is based in Fribourg and offers individual naturopathy consultations for patients from Fribourg and other parts of Switzerland.

Patients also travel to Centre Algos from areas such as Bern, Lausanne and Zürich.

During the first consultation, we take time to understand your symptoms, health history and relevant lifestyle factors before discussing the most appropriate next steps with you.

Depending on your situation, these may include naturopathic care, targeted investigations, another treatment available at Centre Algos, medical assessment or a combination of approaches.

Could naturopathy be appropriate for you?

Naturopathy may be worth considering if you have persistent or recurrent symptoms, want to better understand factors that may be influencing your health, or are looking for an individual approach alongside your existing medical care.

You do not need to know in advance which treatment you need.

A consultation allows us to review your symptoms, health history, previous examinations and treatments and discuss what the most appropriate next steps may be. You can request a consultation in a few minutes.
