Hip Osteoarthritis: Understanding Coxarthrosis and Your Care Options

Has putting on your socks, getting into a car or walking for longer become uncomfortable? Hip osteoarthritis can gradually change how you move and lead you to cut back on outings. At Centre Algos in Fribourg, we take time to understand your difficulties and the activities you want to maintain. Together, we build a personalised approach that may help relieve symptoms and support your independence.

Coxarthrosis: symptoms to recognise

Hip osteoarthritis is also called coxarthrosis. Pain is often felt in the groin, but it may also affect the thigh or buttock, or extend as far as the knee. Pain can also disturb rest or sleep.

Common causes and risk factors

Several factors can contribute to hip osteoarthritis. Age, family history, a previous injury and repeated joint loading can play a part. The shape of the joint, particularly in hip dysplasia, can also increase the likelihood of developing osteoarthritis. Excess body weight can add to the load on this weight-bearing joint.

However, hip pain is not automatically caused by osteoarthritis. Before choosing an approach to care, it is important that your doctor has assessed where the pain is coming from.

How Centre Algos supports you

Understanding your situation as a whole

Your first consultation lasts 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. We discuss when the pain started, your mobility, sleep and activities. We review your medical file, your treatments and the steps you have taken so far.

Centre Algos is run by Wilfried Beijersbergen, nurse anaesthetist and naturopath. Our support works alongside your doctor and does not replace them.

Setting priorities and building your care plan together

Your goals are our starting point: moving with greater confidence, managing your days more comfortably or continuing an activity that matters to you. Together, we build a care plan that fits your circumstances and your ongoing medical care.

Naturopathy allows us to explore nutrition, sleep and recovery. We look for adjustments you can realistically make in everyday life. Any suggestion of herbal products or supplements takes your medicines and medical history into account.

Adapted physical activity and strengthening exercises are core measures in hip osteoarthritis care. We make sure our advice complements the work of your doctor and physiotherapist. Your preferences and your ability to fit changes into your routine are part of the discussion.

Assessing the place of percutaneous hydrotomy

Following assessment, percutaneous hydrotomy can be discussed as a complementary option within an approach aimed at relieving symptoms.

Before any decision, we explain what it involves, its limitations and its contraindications. Outcomes vary from person to person.

When to see your doctor first

Seek medical advice before starting support if your pain has not yet been assessed, is worsening rapidly or persistently disrupts your sleep.

Severe pain after a fall, or an inability to walk or bear weight, requires urgent assessment. Sudden significant pain accompanied by fever or feeling unwell also needs urgent medical advice.

If surgery has been recommended, our support must not delay a necessary decision. The available options remain a discussion for you and your medical team.
